DESIGN | PROTOTYPING | MODEL MAKING

Product designing is a fascinating process for me. Putting together all of the important details the client wants in a package that makes the product stand head and shoulders above the rest of the market place is of the utmost importance. This can be done only by listening to the wishes and desires of client. Adding a certain 'Flare' to the final product is icing on the cake and gives the item the punch it needs to stand out from the herd.

I try not to fall into the same rut other designers seem to be stuck in being a copy cat. I like to take the initiative and design from the imagination and not follow what others are doing. Also designing for the 'Real World' and not the ‘Boardroom' is a challenge but is very rewarding in itself. This can only be done by keeping a finger on the pulse of the consumer.

Prototyping is a different challenge. It requires an understanding of the product and the need for the prototype. By not using up all of the tolerances on the print when making the prototype but instead make it to the actual numbers on the drawing renders a part or item that is tolerance neutral, +- 0.000 and lets the designer and/or engineer have a better understanding of how good the design is and not how good the person making the prototype is. This is not the proper time in the progression of a product to think about fit and finish, the only concern now is to prove the concept and/or make a working item.

Model making is an art form and differs from the prototype in that it is a true representation of the final design, sometimes just cosmetically and sometimes completely in fit and finish. The first is for internal use, the boardroom, different departments or just to get a hands on feel for the item. The second type of model is an accurate representation of the final product for investors, consumers and focus groups.

The first type of model needs to have room left for change, be it the item or the tooling. The second type is the most demanding as the item needs to look, feel and function exactly as the final product will.

If any or all of these strike a cord with you please feel free to contact me. I will be more then happy to discuss your project and needs.
